Fluconazole (Diflucan)

Description:

• Antifungal

Indications:

• Candidiasis therapy and prophylaxis

• Crytococcal menigitis

• Vaginal Candidiasis

Contraindications:

• Known sensitivity to fluconazole 

Precautions:

• Pregnancy category C

• Culture specimens to determine causative organism, use emperically then continue or alter therapy as indicated.

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

• Headache (13%)

• Nausea (7%)

• Abdominal pain (6%)

• Diarrhea (3%)

Dosage:

Administered orally and as injectable

Adult

Vaginal Candidiasis: 

• 150mg for one time dose

Oropharyngeal and Esophageal Candidiasis: 

• 200mg on day 1, then followed by 100mg daily for 14 days

Other Candidiasis: 

• Doses up to 400mg per day until cured

Crytpococcal Meningitis: 

• 400mg on day 1, then followed by 200mg daily for ten to twelve weeks following culture-negative cerebral spinal fluid

Child:

• 3 mg/kg for adult dose of 100mg

• 6 mg/kg for adult dose of 200mg

• 12 mg/kg for adult dose of 400mg
