Thiabendazole (Mintezol)

Category:

• Antihelmintic

  Indications:

• Strongyloiiasis (threadworm)

• Cutaneous larva migran (creeping eruption)

• Visceral larva migrans

Precautions:

• Pregnancy category C

• Monitor patients with hepatic or renal dysfunction.

• Helminthic infections are very communicable.  Treat the entire family/household.

• Adhere to strict hygiene to prevent re-infection.

• Not necessary to use a post-therapy laxative to assist in purging of worms.

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

• Headache, dizziness, drowsiness, psychic disturbances

• Rash, pruritis

• GI upset (anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping/pain)

• Hematuria, enuresis, malodorous urine (asparagus-like smell)

• Tinnitis, fever, visual changes

Dosage:

Administered orally

Adult:

• <68 kg: 22mg/kg per dose for 2 doses a day for 2 consecutive days

• >68kg: 1.5 grams per dose for 2 doses a day for 2 consecutive days

Visceral:

• Administer same dosing guidelines, except continue therapy for 7 days
